Hurricane Season is Here – Be Ready for Floods

Forecasters are predicting another active hurricane season with an above normal number of named storms and hurricanes. Alberto, the year’s first named storm produced flooding across the eastern US, hitting Ellicott City, Maryland and parts of North Carolina particularly hard. This time of year, PCI encourages homeowners and renters to prepare for flooding whether you live in a coastal community or inland.

1. Understand your flood risk.

Determine if you live in a floodplain or if you’re in an area that has flooded previously – there’s a chance it will flood again.

2. Make sure you have flood insurance.

It is important for homeowners to know that flood insurance is not typically covered by a homeowners insurance policy. However, it is available as a separate policy through the National Flood Insurance Program.

3. Be prepared to evacuate to higher ground if necessary.

Listen for weather alerts or flood warnings and map out multiple evacuations routes.

PCI also recommends creating an emergency supply kit, home inventory of your possession and talking with your insurer or agent about your coverage options – including flood insurance.
